Trying to stay healthy without skipping the holiday cheer? Dr. AuBree LaForce has tips to help you thrive without missing the fun!

1. ENJOY by using the 80/20 Approach

Aim to make about 80% of your choices nutritious and balanced, while allowing 20% for holiday indulgences. This avoids all-or-nothing thinking.

2. Movement

Stay active during the holidays to maintain your well-being. Engage in physical activities you ENJOY, whether it's a walk, yoga, dancing, or any form of exercise that brings you joy.

3. Focus On Protein

Focus on protein and vegetables while building your plate. Protein keeps us full and helps with blood sugar balance.

4. Stay Hydrated

Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. Drink water throughout the day and a glass or two before meals. It also helps balance salty foods and alcohol.

5. Don’t Skip Meals

Skipping breakfast or lunch before a big holiday dinner can backfire. You’ll arrive starving and likely overeat. Have a balanced meal earlier with protein, fiber, and healthy fat.

6. Slow Down and Savor

Eat at a relaxed pace. Holiday meals are social—enjoy the conversation, put your fork down between bites, and give your body time to register fullness.

7. Watch Liquid Calories

Eggnog, hot chocolate, festive cocktails, and punches can add up quickly. Choose smaller servings or alternate with water or sparkling water.

8. Bring a Healthy Dish

If you're asked to bring a dish, bring something nutritious you enjoy—like roasted veggies, a hearty salad, or protein-packed bites. You'll guarantee at least one healthy option.

9. Be Portion-Smart

Use smaller plates when you can, start with small portions, and let yourself take seconds only if you're still truly hungry. Try not to hangout around the food table.

10. Keep Your Routine Where Possible

Stick to your usual patterns: include fruits/vegetables daily and maintain a regular sleep schedule. Getting enough sleep will help reduce stress levels and decrease overeating cues.
